The mother and aunt who were arrested in connection with the death of 12-year-old Mimi are scheduled to appear in court today.
Authorities in New Britain, Connecticut, have arrested the mother and aunt of a 12-year-old girl whose remains were discovered near an abandoned property on Oct. 8.
The girl's mother, Karla Garcia, has been charged with murder, and her sister, Jackelyn Garcia, has been charged with cruelty to persons. Jonatan Anita, Karla Garcia's boyfriend, was also detained for mrder and evidence tampering.
The victim, Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres, was found in a container in the backyard of an abandoned home on Clark Street. Authorities say her body was in an advanced state of decomposition and believe she died in the Fall of 2024 while living with her family in Farmington.
Police allege that Mimi suffered prolonged abuse and malnourishment during her life. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Victor Torres, Mimi’s father, and her stepmother, Frances Melendez, said they were informed of her death by police. Torres said he had not seen or spoken to his daughter since before her 12th birthday on Jan. 29. He noted that Mimi had been living with her mother, who had custody, and that he had been unable to reach her for months.
Karla Garcia is being held on a $5 million bond, and Jackelyn Garcia is being held on a $1 million bond.
