An 11-year-old boy was tragically shot and killed during a road rage incident in Henderson, Nevada, while being driven to school by his stepfather. The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. Friday on Interstate 215, roughly 16 miles south of Las Vegas.
According to police, the confrontation began when one driver tried to pass the other on the shoulder. Tyler Matthew Johns, 22, allegedly fired a single shot into the family’s vehicle after a verbal exchange, striking the child seated in the back.
Following the gunfire, the stepfather rammed Johns’ vehicle, forcing both cars to stop in the middle of the freeway. The men then exited their vehicles and continued arguing until an individual flagged down a police officer, allowing authorities to take Johns into custody.
Emergency responders transported the boy to a nearby hospital, but despite extensive efforts, he was pronounced dead.
Homicide detectives arrested Johns on charges of open murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He is being held at the Henderson Detention Center without bond.
Police Chief Reggie Rader called the killing a “senseless act” and urged drivers to remain patient, stressing that the young victim “didn’t have to lose his life.”
