22-Year-Old Suspect Killed in Kansas Shootout That Left Four Officers and His Grandfather Injured

Authorities have identified the man killed in a weekend shootout in Osage County, Kansas, as 22-year-old Stephen M. McMillan. The confrontation erupted after officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at his family’s rural farmhouse around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

McMillan allegedly opened fire as three Osage County deputies and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper arrived at the scene. All four officers were shot, and McMillan’s 77-year-old grandfather was also injured during the exchange of gunfire. In total, five people were wounded before officers returned fire and killed the suspect.

Two deputies underwent surgery and remain in good condition, while a third deputy has been discharged. The injured highway patrol trooper was initially treated in Topeka before being transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center and has since been released.

Authorities said the violence began after a woman at the home called 911 seeking help for a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived, they encountered McMillan outside the residence, and shots were fired less than 10 minutes later. Another trooper on scene, who was not injured, also took part in returning fire.

Neighbors expressed shock, describing the family as kind and deeply religious, and saying they never expected McMillan to be involved in such violence. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
