The victim, Corshawnda Hatter, 33, was walking home with her son and daughter around 3 p.m. Monday on South Bensley Avenue after leaving Orville Bright Elementary School when the group confronted them. Video shows the youths laughing, taunting, and cornering the family before attacking. Hatter is seen shielding her children before she is dragged to the ground, punched, and kicked.
Hatter and her son were later treated at a hospital for their injuries. She said the attack stemmed from ongoing bullying her 9-year-old son has faced at school. The assault occurred just blocks from the school.
The following day, dozens of residents gathered outside the school demanding accountability and urging expulsions. Hatter recounted the terrifying moment, explaining that the attackers followed them before targeting her son, pulling her to the ground, and ripping her younger child’s hair.
The incident has left the mother and her children traumatized. “I can’t sleep,” Hatter said, describing the haunting memory of her son screaming for help.
Some community members said similar behavior has been ongoing and blamed parents for lack of discipline.
Chicago Public Schools issued a brief statement saying they were “horrified” by the attack and are working with city agencies to support the family. Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the assault as “unacceptable,” while State Sen. Willie Preston said no parent should face such violence in their own neighborhood.
Hatter said her son had been previously bullied and is now seeking justice.
Chicago police confirmed that no arrests have been made but officers have increased their presence around the school. Administrators have not yet identified or disciplined the students involved.
