Authorities in Florida say a 15-year-old student will be charged as an adult after allegedly shooting and killing his classmate following a brief hallway encounter at Oak Ridge High School in Sky Lake last month.

The accused, identified as Jacori Antonio Redding, reportedly bumped into 16-year-old Pinien Dalmacy while both were walking in the school hallway on October 9. According to Orange County Sheriff John Mina, the two teens exchanged words, and Redding refused to apologize for the accidental contact.

The dispute continued after school when both boys agreed to meet at a nearby park. Investigators say Redding shot Dalmacy twice during the confrontation before running back to the school campus. He was later arrested inside the school cafeteria, where officers recovered the firearm in his backpack.

Redding was initially detained on juvenile charges including manslaughter with a firearm and possession of a firearm on school property. However, prosecutors have now decided to pursue adult charges, WESH reported.

“My heart aches for Pinien’s family, who are grieving this unimaginable loss,” Sheriff Mina said during a press conference. “And I’m angry that something as small as bumping into someone in the halls of a high school can result in a shooting death.”

A motion filed in Orange County court revealed that Redding had 39 prior disciplinary incidents at school, including at least 17 involving physical altercations such as battery and fighting. He was also previously charged with grand theft auto and resisting an officer without violence.

Investigators say they found text messages in which Redding suggested he intended to make someone believe they were going to fight, then “pop” them.

Community Grieves the Loss

Little personal information has been shared about Dalmacy, but community members and school officials described him as positive, friendly, and well-liked. A GoFundMe organized by his family remembers him as “full of light, always smiling, always dancing.”

“My life changed forever when my baby was taken from me,” his mother wrote. “What happened over something so small has left our family completely broken.”

Redding is currently being held in juvenile detention while the court determines whether he should remain jailed before trial. If convicted as an adult, he faces up to 30 years in prison, according to WFTV.
