A Mesquite, Texas registered nurse has been terminated after viral footage showed her appearing to disregard a Black woman in active labor, sparking widespread outrage and renewed concerns about racial disparities in healthcare.
The nurse, identified as LaCrista Vaughn, was recorded at Dallas Regional Medical Center questioning Karrie Jones about her medical history while the expectant mother screamed in pain and struggled to remain seated in a wheelchair. Despite clearly showing signs of active labor, Jones was not admitted promptly.
Jones’ mother, Kash, secretly recorded the interaction and shared it on TikTok, saying her daughter was left in the waiting area for more than 30 minutes — and that the baby was born just 12 minutes after she was finally taken to a room. The video has since gone viral, amassing over 23 million views and fueling public outrage.
In the footage, Jones can be seen writhing in pain while Vaughn continues her intake questions. At one point, Jones screams that the baby is “right there,” prompting her mother to ask whether this was how the hospital treated all patients or only Black women.
Another clip shows Jones nearly giving birth in the wheelchair as her mother records discreetly from inside her purse, expressing disbelief that staff refused to move her daughter upstairs. When challenged, Vaughn claimed she was unable to take Jones to the labor unit.
Following the online backlash and allegations of neglect, Dallas Regional Medical Center confirmed that Vaughn had been fired.
There needs to be awareness brought to this.

This black woman is screaming in agonizing pain and instead of taking her straight to a room they had her in the waiting room for more than 30 minutes. Her son was born 12 minutes after this video cut off. @dallasregional this is… pic.twitter.com/W4grRJ405V
