University of Alabama Student James “Jimmy” Gracey Found Dead in Barcelona After Night Out

Tragedy has struck after James Jimmy Gracey, a 20-year-old student from the University of Alabama, was found dead during a spring break trip to Barcelona.

Gracey had been reported missing after a night out at the popular beachfront nightclub Shôko Barcelona. His body was later discovered by police divers near Port Olímpic and formally identified the same day.

Authorities from Mossos d'Esquadra believe the cause of death may be drowning, with early theories suggesting Gracey could have fallen from rocks along the shoreline into the Mediterranean Sea after leaving the club.

The discovery came shortly after his wallet was found along Somorrostro Beach, close to where he was last seen around 3 a.m. Investigators say he had become separated from friends and may have been heading toward the water alone.

However, several unanswered questions remain:

  • Surveillance footage shows Gracey leaving the nightclub with an unidentified person

  • His phone was later found in someone else’s possession, though it’s unclear how it got there

  • Witnesses reported seeing him walking toward the shoreline shortly before he disappeared

Police have not ruled out foul play, and investigations are ongoing to piece together his final movements.

Gracey’s family released a statement expressing gratitude for the support they’ve received while asking for privacy during this difficult time.

The case has left both the university community and loved ones searching for answers as they mourn the loss of a young life cut short.
