Brittany Smith recently shared a video captured on her Ring camera showing Richard, a 70-year-old DoorDash driver, delivering her Starbucks order. While watching the footage, Smith noticed the elderly driver appeared to be struggling physically while completing the delivery, which raised concern.
Feeling something wasn’t right, Smith began looking for Richard through social media. After eventually finding him, she learned that he had come out of retirement to work for DoorDash to help cover household expenses and medication costs for himself and his wife.
According to Smith, Richard’s wife had recently lost her job through no fault of her own, which also meant losing access to affordable healthcare. With monthly bills and medical costs piling up, the couple had little money left at the end of each month, forcing Richard to return to work despite his age.
Moved by the situation, Smith launched a GoFundMe campaign hoping to help the couple regain financial stability and allow Richard to retire again. She shared the delivery footage as part of the fundraiser, explaining that the elderly driver wasn’t working because he wanted to—but because he had no other choice.
Her effort quickly captured the attention of thousands online. Within days, more than 7,400 people donated, raising over $212,000 to support the couple.
The fundraiser has become a powerful reminder that even in difficult circumstances, acts of compassion from strangers can make a life-changing difference.
