Julia Varvaro, 29, who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism, was suspended on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after reports emerged detailing her alleged involvement with multiple older men in exchange for money and gifts. A DHS source confirmed that Varvaro is no longer serving in her capacity at the department while an investigation is underway.
The situation came to a head after a man identified only as Robert B., a divorced father who claims to have spent approximately $40,000 funding Varvaro's lifestyle over a three-month relationship, filed an official complaint with the DHS Inspector General. In his complaint, Robert B. expressed concern that Varvaro's apparent financial pressures and behavior posed a potential risk to national security.
Robert B. also alleged that Varvaro maintained a profile on a sugar daddy website called Seeking, where she reportedly went by the name Alessia. The profile, which was reportedly created the day after Thanksgiving last year, was removed shortly after media outlets reached out to Varvaro for comment.
Among the specific allegations, Varvaro reportedly sent Robert B. a photo of a pair of $1,000 sandals in late March and became upset when he did not immediately transfer her the money. She also allegedly requested a $2,000 cosmetic device, citing personal insecurities about her appearance.
Varvaro has pushed back against the allegations, maintaining that her behavior was not out of the ordinary and that it is normal for women to expect financial generosity from their partners. She has also denied having a profile on the Seeking platform.
The suspension has drawn significant attention given Varvaro's senior role overseeing counterterrorism operations at one of the nation's most critical security agencies.
