Bixby Mother Charged with Child Neglect After 5-Month-Old Infant Dies While Co-Sleeping

A Bixby, Oklahoma mother is facing a charge of child neglect after her 5-month-old son died when she reportedly fell asleep on top of him while intoxicated, according to police.

Officers were called to the home of Sarah Jamison around 5:44 a.m. on October 18, 2025. When they arrived, they found the baby’s father administering CPR to the unresponsive infant, who appeared gray and was not breathing, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Police say they attempted for several minutes to wake Jamison, who was in the bed. Officers reported that she smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, and required assistance to walk.

Jamison reportedly told officers, “If my kid is dead, I might as well be too,” and said she had “asked for help.”

According to investigators, Jamison later stated she had consumed a six-pack of Voodoo Ranger Juice Force beer and a shot of rum the previous night. She told officers she had stopped drinking during her pregnancy but resumed drinking about six weeks after giving birth and had been experiencing postpartum struggles.

The child’s father told police that he arrived home around 10 p.m. and drank with Jamison before she took the infant to bed. He said he later found the baby under her shoulder and not breathing before calling 911.

Both parents acknowledged that they regularly co-slept with the baby.

A blood test conducted at the hospital around 8:45 a.m. showed Jamison’s blood alcohol content to be .309, according to the affidavit.

The infant, identified in an online obituary as Barrett Halford, was described as a joyful and cherished child. “Barrett brought immense joy, laughter, and light into our lives,” the obituary read.

Health organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics advise that infants sleep in the same room as their parents, but not in the same bed. Co-sleeping increases the risk of suffocation, entrapment, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), particularly when a parent is extremely tired or under the influence of alcohol.

The AAP recommends infants sleep in a separate bassinet or crib in the parents’ room for at least the first six months.
