A Northwest Indiana family is calling for accountability after a pregnant woman was allegedly forced out of Franciscan Health Crown Point while in active labor—giving birth just eight minutes later in the family’s truck without any medical assistance.
According to relatives, the woman arrived at the hospital early Sunday morning experiencing severe contractions, but staff refused to admit her, claiming she “wasn’t past 3 centimeters.” Video obtained by Region News Source reportedly shows hospital personnel pushing her out in a wheelchair as she struggled in visible pain.
Moments later, the family says the situation became an emergency.
While rushing toward Community Hospital in Munster, the woman gave birth roadside inside their truck—without doctors, nurses, or emergency crews. By the time they arrived at Community at around 6:53 a.m., the baby had already been delivered.
Her sister-in-law later posted a detailed account online, saying the family went through something “no family should ever experience.”
She wrote:
-
At 6:20 a.m., the woman was discharged despite begging not to be sent home.
-
Staff insisted she had not progressed enough for admission.
-
At 6:28 a.m., she delivered her baby inside the truck.
-
Her husband had to perform the delivery alone on the highway.

The family believes racial bias contributed to how she was treated and dismissed.
“We are devastated, angry, and shaken to our core,” the post said. “This was preventable. This was negligent. No family should ever go through this.”
The family says the outcome could have been avoided had staff taken her symptoms seriously. They are now pursuing justice and demanding a full investigation.
Hospital Responds
Franciscan Health issued a brief initial statement, saying patient safety is their top priority and that they have launched an internal investigation. They declined to comment further, citing privacy laws.
Later, Franciscan Health Crown Point President and CEO Raymond Grady released a more detailed message, calling the video “deeply troubling” and acknowledging public concern.
He emphasized that the video “does not accurately reflect” the organization’s values and said the hospital is committed to a thorough review. He also acknowledged broader disparities in healthcare outcomes, stating Franciscan aims to be “part of the solution, not the problem.”
The family says they will continue seeking justice and want to ensure no other mother is placed in a similar, avoidable situation.
