The woman, who also has sickle cell disease, was walking home with her two children after pickup when a group of students began following them, reportedly intent on fighting her son. The group eventually caught up and violently assaulted both the mother and child, knocking them to the ground and beating them.
Despite initial misinformation online, the incident did not occur in Columbia, South Carolina. It happened on Chicago’s South Side.
A community advocacy team investigating the attack says they have identified some of the children involved and will accompany the family to the school to address the matter. Chicago Police Department officials are also aware and are investigating.
The mother and her children are traumatized, and advocates insist that all students involved must be held accountable for the disturbing attack.
