Family Turmoil and Abuse Claims Emerge as Florida Cheerleader’s Death on Caribbean Cruise Sparks Investigation

New details have surfaced about the troubled family dynamics surrounding 18-year-old Florida cheerleader Anna Kepner, whose death aboard the Carnival Horizon has sparked national attention and a federal investigation. Her stepmother and ex-husband have now acknowledged that their 16-year-old son may face charges in connection with Anna’s death, raising questions about long-standing allegations of violence and instability within the family.

Family court documents filed in Brevard County outline disturbing claims from Anna’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, 36, who accused her former husband, Thomas Hudson, of abusing their three children — including the teenage son now under scrutiny by federal authorities. The filings also cite past incidents of domestic violence involving Thomas and the children.

Shauntel divorced Thomas in 2023 before marrying Anna’s biological father, Christopher Kepner, 41. At the time of the tragedy, Anna was traveling on the six-day Caribbean cruise with her father, stepmother, her siblings, and Shauntel’s biological children — including 16-year-old Tim Hudson, who is now alleged to have been involved in the teen’s death.

Before official statements hinted at the minor’s possible involvement, a man identifying himself as Martin Donohue took to social media claiming that Tim had beaten Anna to death, wrapped her body in blankets, concealed it under a bed, and slept above it “as if nothing had happened.” Though many initially dismissed the claims as attempts at attention-seeking, recent acknowledgments from the Hudsons have cast those allegations in a different light.

The family’s past has also come under scrutiny. A Facebook user shared old court documents suggesting that Anna’s father, Christopher, had previously been accused of sexual misconduct in a case involving a 15-year-old babysitter — allegations that were later dismissed. The babysitter, Tabatha Donahue, reportedly went on to become his second wife.

During the cruise, Anna shared a cabin with her biological brother Connor and her stepbrother Timothy, a detail that has fueled speculation about what may have taken place in the hours leading up to her death. The minor’s parents had been scheduled to appear in family court regarding previous abuse allegations involving their children, including Tim, shortly before the incident on the ship.

The case has ignited heated debate online, with many commenters blaming the adults in Anna’s life for failing to protect her. One social media user wrote, “The stepmom should be the one facing charges. She fed those boys hatred toward their step-sister. Don’t blame their father.”

As public speculation intensifies, the FBI has remained silent on the cause and manner of Anna’s death or whether charges will be filed against the juvenile suspect. A spokesperson stated only: “No further information is being released at this time.”
