Lawsuit Claims Lynchburg Fire Department Ignored Racist Behavior, Promoted Firefighter Captain Scott Hargis Caught on Video

A new lawsuit alleges that the Lynchburg Fire Department was aware of multiple instances of racist behavior among its firefighters — some of which were reportedly captured on video — but failed to take any disciplinary action.

According to the complaint, rather than investigating or reprimanding the individuals involved, the department allegedly promoted the firefighters despite clear evidence of misconduct.

The lawsuit accuses department leadership of fostering a toxic and discriminatory workplace culture, allowing racist actions to go unchecked and creating a hostile environment for minority employees.

City officials have not yet commented publicly on the allegations, and it remains unclear whether internal investigations have been launched in response to the claims.

The case has sparked outrage in the community, with civil rights advocates calling for transparency, accountability, and an independent review of the department’s leadership and promotion practices.
