A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Friday afternoon while responding to a vehicle crash in Kendall County, after an altercation broke out with one of the individuals involved in the incident.
Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was dispatched to the crash near the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street shortly before 4 p.m. According to Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, Jaramillo attempted to subdue one of the parties when the man suddenly attacked him, disarmed or gained control in the struggle, and shot the deputy.
“He was brutally attacked, and he was murdered,” Cordero-Stutz said during an emotional Friday evening briefing. “He’s not only a deputy, he’s a son, he’s a brother, and he is a friend. He gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, defending us. What happened is unacceptable.”
Bystanders immediately called 911, and responding deputies provided aid before transporting Jaramillo to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
After shooting the deputy, the gunman returned to a green Mustang and fatally shot himself, according to NBC6 and sources at the scene. WPLG reported that the suspect was previously the subject of a domestic violence call handled by Jaramillo earlier in the same district.
A second individual at the crash scene was detained for questioning but is not considered a suspect.
Investigators are working to determine whether Jaramillo was shot with his own firearm during the altercation.
The scene drew a heavy law enforcement response, including FBI agents, Florida Highway Patrol, and Coral Gables Police. Several surrounding roadways were shut down as officers secured the area.
By evening, dozens of officers had gathered at the hospital for a procession honoring the fallen deputy.
Deputy Jaramillo held a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Florida and previously interned with the FBI. He served nearly four years with the Coral Gables Police Department, earning the Officer of the Month award in July 2023 for solving multiple theft cases.
He followed the path of his father, David Jaramillo, a retired Miami-Dade Police detective and former president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association.
