According to a statement released by the Charleston Police Department on Thursday, November 6, recently recovered video evidence shows that Kenney died by suicide after walking onto the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian walkway at approximately 3:49 a.m. on Friday, October 31.
Police have now shifted from a search to a recovery effort and say they continue to stay in close communication with Kenney’s family.
“Our priority has always been and will remain Owen’s family. This is a real case involving a real family living through unimaginable pain, and they deserve compassion, privacy, and support from all of us,” said Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker.
Last Known Movements
Detectives previously shared an image of Kenney’s last verified sighting. He was observed walking alone toward the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian walkway shortly after 3 a.m. His cellphone’s last location also pinged from the same area.
Kenney had last been seen by friends near King Street and Burns Lane around 2 a.m. before he was reported missing the following day.

Kenney graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School in New Jersey in 2024 and transferred to the College of Charleston in January 2025. He was in his second semester at the time of his passing.
At this time, authorities have not released details regarding factors that may have contributed to his death, and they are asking the public to allow the family space to grieve.
