Teen Reports Severe Assault by Father After False Accusation of Theft; Claims Police Failed to Act

Ashanti Norman has come forward on social media with disturbing allegations that she was brutally beaten, restrained, and threatened by her father, Jonathan Norman, after he accused her of stealing $2,500 — an accusation later proven false. Despite the severity of her injuries and the details she reported, Ashanti says police did not treat her as a victim or pursue the assault as a criminal case.

According to Ashanti, she had gone to her father’s home to pick up clothing when he later called, accusing her of taking the missing money. His girlfriend, identified only as Courtney, also questioned her. When Jonathan arrived at her grandfather’s home to confront her, Ashanti says he searched her belongings, found nothing, and then assaulted her before forcing her into his vehicle.

Despite reviewing security footage that showed the cash inside a Walmart bag — something Ashanti says she had tried to explain — Jonathan allegedly escalated the violence. At his home, she says he hit her repeatedly, shoved a sock in her mouth, tied a shoelace around her head to keep it in place, bound her hands behind her back, and whipped her with a dryer cord while his girlfriend watched.

Ashanti alleges she was then locked inside a shed while still tied up and gagged, before being brought back inside where her shirt was cut off and the assault continued. At one point, she says her father pressed a gun to her forehead while walking her back to her grandfather’s home.

When she reached the house — still tied, shirt cut off, and visibly injured — family members saw her condition. Jonathan followed her inside, continuing to insist she had stolen the money before eventually destroying her phone and leaving.

Police were called, but Ashanti says responding officers focused on the theft accusation Jonathan texted to her mother rather than the physical abuse, kidnapping, and false imprisonment she reported. She claims the officers failed to treat her as a victim despite her condition and the severity of the allegations.

In her post, Ashanti expressed hurt not only over the assault but also over the reaction of extended family members, some of whom allegedly minimized or justified her father’s actions.

Her case has sparked conversations online about the treatment of Black girls by families, communities, and law enforcement — and how often their reports of abuse are ignored or dismissed.

Ashanti says she shared her story publicly because she wants to be heard: “I don’t want nobody to feel sorry for me — I just want my story to be heard… I know God got my back and they will get their karma.”
