Toronto Mother Sentenced to Life After Suffocating Two Sons Amid Deep Grief

A Toronto mother has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting to suffocating her two young sons just nine days after her husband died of cancer. Vanessa Collias, 27, broke down in court as she pleaded guilty to killing Yiannis, 5, and Dimitri, 4, in December 2023 following the death of her 72-year-old husband Costa, who succumbed to aggressive leukemia.

According to reports, Collias became overwhelmed by grief and placed her hands over her children’s mouths and noses while softly singing “You Are My Sunshine.” After killing the boys, she attempted to end her own life by jumping from their apartment balcony. She survived but was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Police responding to the scene found the brothers lying in front of a television playing a children’s program. Nearby were their laid-out funeral outfits, their birth certificates, a cross, and a photograph of their recently deceased father. A post-mortem report confirmed that both boys were healthy, well-nourished, and showed no signs of abuse.

Originally charged with first-degree murder, Collias’ charges were reduced to second-degree murder due to the extreme psychological distress she was experiencing after her husband’s death. In court, she said she felt “broken, absolutely alone,” and unable to imagine life without her husband. A psychiatrist diagnosed her with adjustment disorder, noting previous trauma and the overwhelming burden of caring for her dying spouse.

Collias told the court she had made multiple suicide attempts before resorting to jumping off the balcony. From jail, she expressed deep remorse, saying she hoped others would understand that she believed she was “saving” her children and reuniting the family in heaven.

Despite the reduced charge, she was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 18 years. Collias said she accepts that society sees her actions as morally and legally wrong but maintains she was consumed by grief, trauma, and hopelessness at the time.
