According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, McGrain was running along E. 1500 Road around 6 p.m. on Thursday when she was struck by a white pickup truck. The driver fled the scene, leaving McGrain critically injured.
Her body was not discovered until 3:35 a.m. Friday, nearly ten hours later, when a passerby spotted her and contacted law enforcement. Investigators later determined she had likely been hit shortly after she set out for her run earlier that evening.
Authorities said surveillance footage captured the truck that struck McGrain, which became a central piece of evidence. After multiple public tips and an extensive search, deputies located the suspected vehicle and driver late Sunday, leading to the arrest.
“After an extensive investigation, which included examining evidence and responding to numerous tips from the public, on Sunday, Nov. 9, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the suspected vehicle and driver involved in Thursday’s hit-and-run crash that killed 20-year-old University of Kansas student Elsa McGrain,”
the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The name of the arrested suspect had not yet been released at the time of reporting.
McGrain, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, was pursuing a pre-medical track at KU and was expected to graduate in 2026. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority, where she served on the executive board as house manager.
Her sorority sisters shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, writing:
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved sister, Elsa McGrain.
Elsa was the kind of person everyone wanted to be: genuine, kind, and full of light. She noticed the quiet one in the room, checked in on you whether things were good or bad, and was the loyal friend we all strive to be.”
The Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences, saying:
“Our hearts go out to Elsa’s family and friends in this incredibly tragic situation.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are still encouraging anyone who may have seen the vehicle or was in the area between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday to come forward.
