A member of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Student Representative Council (SRC) has been accused of rape by a 20-year-old student — a case that has triggered widespread outrage across campus.
The suspect, identified as Musawenkosi Mavuso, is a third-year Bachelor of Education student and a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) student faction.
According to a statement shared by the alleged victim on social media, the assault took place on a Friday night at around 8:30 PM. She reported the incident to Campus Control, who have since confirmed that CCTV footage of the encounter was reviewed.
The victim has described experiencing severe emotional and mental distress following the incident, saying she is struggling to study and cope, and has experienced suicidal thoughts.
The campus community has responded strongly. Wits students staged a protest at the residence where Mavuso lives, demanding that the institution take firm action. Following the demonstration, it was reported that Mavuso was detained by police.
The university and the EFF Student Command have not yet released official statements regarding the matter, as the case remains under investigation.
