Detroit Pair Charged With First-Degree Murder in Fatal Stabbing of Cordell Harris

Two suspects, Steven Lewis Hooks and Bernice Shaneka Chenevert, have been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of Cordell Harris at a liquor store in Detroit.

According to prosecutor Kym Worthy, the incident happened late on March 10, 2026, along the 14800 block of Livernois Avenue. Authorities allege that Harris had a brief interaction with Chenevert, which escalated into a verbal altercation.

Investigators say Chenevert then contacted Hooks and allegedly handed him a broken glass bottle. Hooks is accused of stabbing Harris multiple times in the neck. Harris was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries.

Both suspects have been charged with premeditated first-degree murder and were arraigned on March 13, 2026, in 36th District Court, where they were remanded into custody.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 23, followed by a preliminary examination on March 30 before Judge Shawn Jacque.

The case remains under investigation, and both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
