Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer-Bowen, a prominent Florida Democrat who was reportedly preparing a congressional run, was found dead in her home on Wednesday morning, with her husband Stephen Bowen arrested shortly after in connection with her death.
Authorities conducted a wellness check at the couple's residence at approximately 10:00 AM, where they discovered Bowen's body. Police Chief Brad Mock confirmed that the death is being investigated as a domestic violence incident, adding that no other suspects or additional threats have been identified. The specific charges Stephen Bowen faces and his current location in custody have not yet been publicly disclosed, according to reports from the Miami Herald.
Nancy Metayer-Bowen was a trailblazing figure in South Florida politics. First elected as vice mayor in 2020 and re-elected in 2024, she made history as the first Black and Haitian American woman to serve on the Coral Springs city commission. She also held the position of Vice Chair of Haitian Outreach for the Florida Democratic Party. According to a post by Representative Jared Moskowitz on X, Bowen had been in the process of preparing a campaign for a seat in Congress.
The couple had marked their three-year wedding anniversary just months prior, in November of last year.
The news has sent shockwaves through Florida's political community, with many officials and community members mourning the loss of a historic and dedicated public servant.
