Authorities and community members are on edge following the discovery of a body on the northwest end of Horn Island on Monday morning, as search efforts for missing Mississippi football player Nolan Wells remain actively ongoing.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter confirmed the discovery of the body, though officials have not yet publicly confirmed whether it is connected to the search for Wells. The circumstances surrounding the find are still being investigated.
Nolan Wells was last seen at approximately 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 4, near the west tip of the north side of Horn Island. His mother, Christine Wonsley, has confirmed that her son has not yet been located, and multiple responding agencies continue to search the area.
Authorities are urging anyone who was present on Horn Island on July 4, traveled by boat in the surrounding waters, or may have seen Nolan or offered him a ride from the island to come forward immediately with any information that could assist search crews.
Boaters and visitors near Horn Island and the surrounding barrier islands are also being asked to remain vigilant and report anything that could aid in the search. Officials have reminded the public not to interfere with active search operations or put themselves at risk in the process.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Marine Patrol at (844) WE-R-MDMR or (228) 523-4134, or reach out to their local law enforcement agency directly. Authorities are specifically asking the public to share only verified information from official sources rather than circulating unconfirmed details on social media.
Nolan's family, friends, volunteers, and first responders remain in the thoughts and prayers of the wider community as the search presses on.
